There are lots of creative ways to bridge your housing needs. The Housing Office at Emily Carr University maintains a current list of the best temporary options we can find.
Drop us a line if you learn of another great resource for our students.
Airbnb is a community marketplace where guests can book spaces from hosts, connecting people who have space to spare with those who are looking for a place to stay. Through their experiences on Airbnb, guests and hosts build real connections with real people from all over the globe. Less expensive than a hotel, this is a great way to check out different neighbourhoods in the city.
A homestay gives you an opportunity to live with a Canadian family while you pursue your studies. Homestays are a great way to transition into your new city–they typically include a furnished private room in a family home, a meal plan and utilities such as wifi, as well as meaningful family time, conversations and excursions.
GEC runs a number of student oriented apartment buildings throughout the city. Depending on which location, students can determine their type of room (shared, single, etc.) and length of stay. Most apartments include full kitchens, bathrooms and a balcony. For more details, email firstname.lastname@example.org
Because of the central location this temporary option is ideal for exchange students and new students that are getting to know the city and the university.
Vanmates provides both homestays and shared residential housing throughout the city. Their residential housing includes a fully furnished private room, wifi, utilities and access to communal space. Prices range between $650-$1300 per month, with a minimum three month stay. Applications are accepted continuously.

The St. Clair is an international backpacker’s hostel located right in the heart of Downtown. Emily Carr students could probably get to school with a 30 min walk, or 10 minute bus ride. The St. Clair is cheaper than most hostels in Vancouver and offers low season specials. During the summer they tend to fill up with backpackers, but in the winter months (when school is in session for most) they have plenty of space and offer private rooms (with shared bathrooms) for $650/month. No damage deposit of course as it’s a hostel. They also have weekly rates, and of course nightly rates for all private rooms and dorms. Currently rated 75% on Hostelworld.
